What is Archivo Canarias?
Archivo Canarias is an independent initiative that documents, organizes, and connects contemporary cultural talent that was born in, or grew up in, the Canary Islands.
Its purpose is to offer a structured and accessible overview of the archipelago’s cultural ecosystem, making it easier for individuals, institutions, companies, and cultural agents, both locally and internationally, to identify, discover, and connect with specific profiles according to their needs. The archive functions as a digital connection tool for a territory located far from Europe’s main cultural and productive centers.
The project also seeks to position Canary Islands culture within a global context, projecting a distinct identity shaped by insularity, its status as a European outermost region, and elements such as volcanic landscapes, light, the sea, biodiversity, folklore, and our relationship with tourism. These elements form part of a shared imaginary that runs through many of the practices included in the archive, emerging from a common lived experience.
Archivo Canarias operates as a cultural archive. It is not an agency nor a commercial intermediary platform. It does not manage commissions and is not responsible for any relationships or collaborations that may arise between individuals or entities connecting through the archive.
The project is continuously expanding and is developed collaboratively with the people included in it. Its commitment is to maintain a rigorous, coherent, and accessible resource, designed to serve as a useful tool for research, programming, and collaboration with Canary Islands cultural talent, within the possibilities of an independent and self-funded initiative.
How are profiles selected?
Archivo Canarias is a curated archive. Profiles are incorporated through a carefully considered editorial process.
The main inclusion criterion is to have been born in the Canary Islands or, if born elsewhere, to have grown up in the islands from an early stage of life (childhood or adolescence), so that one’s identity, education, and cultural practice are clearly shaped by the experience of developing within the insular context, with its specific structural and social conditions.
This criterion is intended to define a specific research and archival framework centered on a shared lived experience.
The archive includes both individuals currently residing in the islands and members of the Canary Islands diaspora, understood as a direct consequence of that same formative context.
Profiles are identified in different ways:
· Recommendations from people already included in the archive
· Proposals received via email or social media
· Direct research and ongoing monitoring by the project
All profiles are reviewed carefully and, if they align with the archive’s editorial framework, are incorporated progressively, depending on the project’s pace and available resources. The selection seeks to balance strong, high-quality practices with a diverse representation of islands, disciplines, styles, and trajectories.
Due to the independent nature of the project, sometimes review and incorporation timelines may be slow. Archivo Canarias prioritizes coherence and the long-term sustainability of the archive over speed or the accumulation of profiles.
How to Explore the Archive
Archivo Canarias is designed to let you explore, search and connect in different ways.
The search bar allows you to find profiles by place of origin (such as “Gran Canaria”) or by current place of residence, shown with the📍icon. This makes it easy to locate specific profiles in particular locations.
You can also combine tags and locations to refine your results, or filter by materials, techniques, themes or year of birth. To find a specific profile by name, simply type “@” followed by the person’s name, which will autocomplete as you type.
The tag index brings together all the tags used across the archive and offers an overview of disciplines, techniques, materials, themes and territories. Browsing through it is a way to discover unexpected links and explore profiles more freely.
On the map, profiles are displayed within a general area based on postcode rather than exact address, protecting privacy while still showing the global distribution of Canarian cultural talent. This helps you find people nearby or connect with those living in the same city or country.
Each profile can be shared via its share button, and full searches or groups of profiles can also be shared simply by copying and pasting the URL.
The site is available in Spanish and English, and you can switch between languages from the top-right corner.
We encourage you to try different filters and combinations to make the most of the tool.
Contribute to the Archive
Sharing Archivo Canarias with individuals, professionals or projects who may find it relevant is one of the most valuable ways to support the initiative, as it helps extend its reach and visibility.
Archivo Canarias is also open to collaborations with cultural institutions, educational centres, festivals, museums, publications and research projects. We particularly welcome initiatives that contribute to strengthening the archive’s sustainability, expanding its visibility, and activating new forms of exchange, research or collaboration around the Canary Islands’ cultural talent, both locally and internationally.
You can also contribute by suggesting new profiles, especially from islands, disciplines or cultural fields that are currently underrepresented in the archive. This helps ensure the platform reflects the breadth and diversity of the Canary Islands’ cultural ecosystem.
Finally, if you notice errors, technical issues or any inconsistencies, we would appreciate you letting us know. This feedback is essential to improving the platform and keeping it reliable and up to date.

Have You Connected Through the Archive?
The main purpose of Archivo Canarias is to help create real connections. If the archive has led to a collaboration, commission, project, exhibition, residency, or any kind of creative or professional exchange, even something small, we’d really appreciate hearing about it.
Knowing these cases helps us understand whether the tool is working, assess its impact, and continue improving it. With your permission, we may also document practical examples to show how the archive is being used and to reinforce its public value. This is also important for gathering support and ensuring the project can continue.
