Héctor Mangas (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, 1999) is a cognitive psychologist whose practice spans perception science and graphic design. Since 2022, he has worked as a cognitive researcher at the type foundry Typotheque (The Hague), translating user research into design decisions. He studies reading and letter recognition, focusing on factors such as age and low vision. He also researches other writing systems with the aim of democratising legibility research beyond the West, including studies on Cyrillic, Armenian, Devanagari, Arabic, and Tamil scripts.

Alongside this, he maintains a design and installation practice, with projects connected to the Canary Islands such as Ambient Body (2026), an installation exploring the creative process, and 00110010.org (2024), a time capsule for young Canarian artists. Since 2024, he has collaborated with the Centre for Visibility Design in Copenhagen. His research has been published in Information Design Journal and Journal of Writing Research, and his work has shaped publications such as Accessibility Tools (2026), Terrassa (2025), Zed (2024), and Dash (2023).
